David Banner speaks to the Youth

Truth Be Told was able to secure rapper David Banner for the "Young Men Rising" Conference in Chicago on 9/11. The event was sponsored by the Kellogg Foundation.

These young American men of Asian, Pacific Islander, Native, Latino, Arab and African descent spent a weekend to discuss, strategize and imagine community solutions to improve structural conditions that impede opportunities for historically marginalized males.

David Banner shared his personal life story and encouraged the young men to not only achieve their dreams but also give back. David Banner, a Mississippi native, has his own foundation and most notably provided aid for Katrina victims through the foundation and concert "Heal the Hood" which raised $500,000.

Truth Be Told would like to thank Frontline Solutions, the conference organizers, and David Banner and his team for making it a successful event! The photo was provided by Jamaica Gilmer of Izri Creative. For more photos check out the Truth Be Told Facebook Page.

Q&A with Jessica Care Moore on her new work "God Is Not An American"

This week we hope you take a moment to read a brief interview with Jessica Care Moore as she discusses her new book of poetry called "God Is Not An American" available starting this weekend. She calls it her "most mature" and "apologetically political."

Do you have a favorite poem in your new book “God Is Not An American”?

Some of my favorites are:

“even the light skinned girls are sick of the light skinned girls (for dream hampton)”

“black/south/africa”

“dhs office trip #7”

What is the meaning behind the title?

I came up with the title while I was writing the poem. To me it is my most mature writing. It is very apologetically political.

After 9/11 I wanted to do a book that focused on my experiences outside the country and how people took me and how traveling shaped my vision. The title is also a metaphor for the wars and the way we blow up children. We are supposed to be this country of humanitarians but we destroy people in the name of oil. God is not an American or anything else. People have lost what God is supposed to mean.

Where can I purchase the book?

At my website: http://mooreblackpress.com/ or at some of the events where I will be performing.
